SPARK! REIMAGINING THE FIRE WITHIN
Reimagine your own creative potential! Experience a spoken word performance and workshop with Washington D.C.’s Pages Matam. Originally from Cameroon, Pages is an internationally-recognized spoken word poet and two-time National Poetry Slam champion who will perform, create, and engage with you. Sometimes all you need is a spark to get reacquainted with your fire within!
The engagement will be moderated by Charity Blackwell, a spoken word artist, host, emcee and current Director of Poetry Events at the Washington, D.C. area’s famous Busboys and Poets, a cultural hub for artists and writers where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted through spoken word poetry.
POET BIO
Pages Matam is an international artist, writer, event coordinator, & educator from Cameroon, Central Africa, currently residing in Washington D.C. He is a recipient of the DC Commissions Arts and Humanities Fellowship, as well as a Callaloo Fellow, and author of the award-winning full-length collection The Heart of a Comet (Write Bloody, 2014). A polyglot National poetry slam champion and National Fair Housing Alliance Cultural Ambassador, he has over a decade of experience in youth programs, creative writing and performance education, and artistic programs as the Director of Poetry Events for Busboys and Poets. Pages has been featured on various renowned platforms and venues such as the NAACP, The Guardian & Google Voices, Huffington, Okay Africa, Macy’s, the Kennedy Center, the Apollo Theater, BET Lyric Cafe, TV One’s Verses & Flow, and more. During the day he is turning poems into scripts and collaborating on creative and holistic healing spaces. ABOUT CHARITY BLACKWELL (Current Interim Director of Poetry Events for Busboys and Poets)
DC SCORES Director of Writing and current interim Director of Poetry Events for Busboys and Poets Charity Blackwell is a spoken word artist, host, emcee, and poetry specialist. A Trinity University graduate, she received her B.A and M.A. in Communications. Charity’s natural stage presence and charm have earned her hosting accolades, at events including Poetry SLAMS for DC SCORES (2013-2016), the America SCORES New York National Poetry SLAM! (2015 -2016), Busboys and Poets Open Mics (2016-Current), the Our Words Our City Poetry Showcase (2017), the Women’s March Open Mic (2017), and many more. She has performed original work on international networks including the BBC and throughout the East Coast. She is currently working on her first book of poems.

Bio of Derek Brown
Derek Brown is a spirits and cocktail expert, consultant, writer, and owner of 2017 Spirited Award winning "Best American Cocktail Bar," Columbia Room, and author of Spirits, Sugar, Water, Bitters: How the Cocktail Conquered the World, published by Rizzoli in April 2019. His work has earned several James Beard Award nominations, "Author of the Year" for the 2020 Nightclub & Bar Show Awards, and 2015 "Bartender of the Year" in Imbibe magazine. He is also Chief Spirits
Advisor to the National Archives Foundation and a Distinguished Fellow at Catholic University’s Ciocca Center for Principled Entrepreneurship. Brown’s writing on spirits and cocktails has appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Vox and other publications. In 2020, Drinks International named him one of the Bar World 100, a list of the top beverage figures effecting positive change in the global bar industry. His second book on no- and low- alcohol cocktails, Mindful Mixology, is slated for release January 2022.
Malik Dope
Malik DOPE is a Washington, D.C. native who combines hip hop, DC Go-Go, R&B and dance into his unique style of drumming. He WOWs audiences with his high-energy style and dance moves!
Malik has performed at multiple festivals such as the “Charged Up” Festival, DC Funk Parade, Broccoli City Festival, Afro Punk, SXSW, A3C, and Made in America. Malik has “gone viral” numerous times, and received media attention with Time Magazine, Complex Magazine, Fader, Hypebeast, Revolt TV, Circa News, Fox 5 News, WUSA Channel 9 News, ABC Channel 7 News and more. Malik has performed with popular, award-winning artists such as Usher Raymond, Wale, Erykah Badu, Mike Will Made It, Rae Sremmurd, BackYard Band, D.R.A.M and others! He was most recently featured on the current season of America’s Got Talent!
