Rudolph A. Dubord, III, CPP

In Mr. Dubord’s nomination it states, “ Rudy DuBord has served as a dedicated Committee Chair for the SFBA chapter Certification Committee for 20 years”. Two of the amazing things that Rudy has championed during his tenure as the Certification Committee Chair are the building out of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter’s “certification library” and holding yearly certification review study sessions. He has also been a champion and coach to those seeking their certifications, which can be the big differentiator in whether someone is successful in their pursuit of an ASIS certification.

About the Award

The Ralph Day Memorial Security Officer Heroism Award is bestowed by the ASIS Security Services Council and honors those that perform a heroic act in which a private security officer risks his or her life to save another person. Nominees must be an employee of a contract security company employed as a security officer. This award for heroism is aptly named after Mr. Day, who was a longtime volunteer for the Security Services Council prior to his death in July 2020.

About the Winner

Vipasha Sharma, Condor Security

On 17 April 2020, Sharma, assigned at a downtown Toronto, Ontario condominium, responded to four major events simultaneously: a domestic dispute, a fire, a flood, and the death of a resident. Sharma heroically saved the life of one of the residents by separating a victim from a violent assailant. Once confident that the victim was safe, she quickly turned her attention to dealing with a live fire incident and major water leak, caused by the suspected assailant, which required a full building evacuation. Sharma’s quick thinking, calm demeanor during a crisis, and bravery were critical to saving the life of the attack victim and ensuring that all building residents remained calm and evacuated safely before additional lives and property were damaged.

Sharma has been in the security industry for two years and has completed many additional voluntary and advanced training programs offered by her employer. She is highly respected and is esteemed by her colleagues and the community she serves for her level of professionalism and attention to detail in performing her duties. She is motivated by the opportunity to learn new things, to develop creative ideas to improve processes, to analyze complex data to draw clear and efficient conclusions, and to work with a team to achieve collective goals.

He previously served as a Counterterrorism Operations Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency and held several leadership roles with Target Corporation prior to joining Facebook.
In the words of his nominator, Mike Allen, CSO, Manulife: “I had the pleasure of following Nick online several years ago and was impressed with his transparent sharing of best practices. I finally had the pleasure at hearing him speak at GSX a few years ago and knowing some of his team, began benchmarking with them on events and ideas. I finally connected with Nick in person at the CSO Summit in Minneapolis and was astonished at how open, honest, and down to earth he was. He spoke about not only security professionals, but their organizations needing to work together on moving global objectives forward to do great things.

For the next 4 years my team or I could not attend an event from Canada to the US without having Nick or one of his team speaking, mentoring, moderating etc. Nick travelled to ASIS Europe to participate and continuously shows that the protection of people and the enterprise has no boundaries. Nick has made himself available at the GSX Career Center and encourages a work environment where both he and his team can continue to build on their skills. Under his leadership, his security program has become a center of excellence. As a CPP, Nick has demonstrated his commitment to both the security industry and to give back. Nick is a busy CSO in his day to day life – he encourages diversity, education, collaboration and makes the time to keep giving back. I am personally inspired by his tenacity and vigor and believe he should be the recipient in 2020.”

About the Winner

Strategic Security: Forward Thinking for Successful Executives by Jean Perois, CPP

In Strategic Security, Jean Perois argues that security professionals too often approach their roles through a reactive lens rather than a proactive one—serving more as “firefighters” than as strategists. The book looks to help security managers think strategically about their job, the culture of their workplace, and the nature of security planning and implementation. About the Winner

Glendale, AZ Police Department

Retail theft in Circle K Convenience Store properties in the City of Glendale, AZ, had become a problem. Working together with ASU and Circle K management, the Glendale Police Department was able to begin bringing video feed from 18 Circle K store properties into the Police Department’s newly developed Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), the first in the Phoenix area.

When there is a call for service at a Circle K property, the Police Department is now capable of accessing Circle K in-store cameras, which provide officers with vital information along with immediate updates as to what is occurring at the incident location. Based on monthly data analysis, the Police Department can have officers adjust their proactive enforcement in areas where an increase in crime trends is shown and they can work directly with affected businesses to develop realistic solutions.

As a result of this cooperative effort with Circle K, the Glendale, AZ Police Department has increased its joint partnerships with other key business partners. The project also provided a blueprint for other Phoenix-area agencies and businesses to create new relationships and increase their partnerships to create safer communities.

About the Winner

Basil Anthony Bewry, CPP, PCI, PSP

Bewry joined ASIS in 2005 and has been instrumental in the continuous development of the Jamaica Chapter, serving as Chapter Chair for 12 of his 15 years of service. Among his many achievements, the one dearest to his heart is the introduction of the Chapter’s flagship study courses, which have assisted 51 individuals in earning their CPP and PSP certifications.

Due to his passion for improving the standard and proficiency of the local security profession, the Jamaica Chapter is one of the most decorated in ASIS and has at present 11 CPPs, 12 PCIs, 30 PSPs, and seven triple certificants. In recognition for advancing the goals of certification, the Professional Certification Board awarded Bewry the Certificate of Appreciation in 2016. He was also a recipient of ASIS’ Meritorious Service Award in 2018 for fostering a spirit of goodwill and professionalism.

In 2019, the Jamaica Chapter became the largest chapter in Region 7B with 107 members – 46 joining that year! Bewry continues to deliver member value by inviting high-profile speakers to chapter meetings and providing certified members ample opportunities to earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits. The increased visibility of the Chapter was also made possible through the relaunching of its award-winning chapter website and the introduction of the newsletter, “The Informer.”

About the Award

Now in its seventh year, the Security Industry Book of the Year is chosen by a committee of ASIS members who are established authors, editors, and reviewers. Eligible books were authored by ASIS members and published in 2019.

About the Winner

Strategic Security: Forward Thinking for Successful Executives by Jean Perois, CPP

In Strategic Security, Juan Perois argues that security professionals too often approach their roles through a reactive lens rather than a proactive one—serving more as “firefighters” than as strategists. The book looks to help security managers think strategically about their job, the culture of their workplace, and the nature of security planning and implementation. Learn more in the August 2020 issue of Security Management.
